Ten Texts About Baptism

 1. Mark 1:9 “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. 10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.1.KJV Notice Jesus and John were in the river Jordan.

2. Acts 8:38 “And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.8.KJV Notice that both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water.

3. Romans 6:4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ROM.6.KJV Only baptism by immersion can be a symbol of being buried with Jesus. Sprinkling just won’t doI’ve known old people who felt so strongly about getting baptized before they die that they have had a minister come to their home and baptize them in their bathtub. The place doesn’t matter; the heart does. There are cases of those who cannot be baptized, such as the thief on the cross. God accepts the fact that a person would get baptized if it were physically possible for them to do so.  God cannot accept a halfhearted conversion, however.

4. Mark 16:16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.16.KJV Notice if one believes in Jesus, he/she should then be baptized.

5. Matthew 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.28.KJV Jesus commands all who would be his disciples to go make more disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

6. Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.2.KJV

7. Acts 3:19 “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.3.KJV Repentance includes more than just an acknowledgement of our sins, but also a turning away from them. Jesus told the woman caught in adultery “go and sin no more.” John 8:11 “She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.8.KJV We cannot think that we can keep on in our wicked ways and God will forgive us just because we once spoke the words, “I’m sorry.”

8. Acts 10:44 “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.10.KJV Salvation is for all who will accept Jesus, not just a certain group of people.

9. Acts 19:1 “And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.19.KJV These disciples were rebaptized in the name of Jesus.  If a person was baptized, say as an infant, and they decided as an older teen or as an adult to follow Jesus there is precedent for getting rebaptized. There may also be a number of other reasons why a person might feel the need to be rebaptized.

10. Acts 22:16 “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.22.KJV If you feel God’s call on your heart, do not delay, tomorrow is not promised to anyone.
