Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/DAN.9.KJV The commandment to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem was given in Ezra 7:1 “Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king. 12 Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time. 13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee. 14 Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand; 15 and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, 16 and all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem: 17 that thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18 And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God. 19 The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure house. 21 And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/EZR.7.KJV There are two earlier decrees to rebuild Jerusalem, but this decree also restored all of the temple treasures. We know from historical records that the seventh year of the reign of king Artaxerxes was 457 BC. The angel said that 69 prophetic weeks, or 483 literal years (69 x 7 = 483), added to 457 BC would reach to the Messiah (Daniel 9:25). Mathematical calculations show that moving ahead 483 years from the fall of 457 BC reaches the fall of AD 27. (“The seventh year of the reign of King Artaxerxes I is a significant date in biblical chronology, marking the time when Ezra, a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, journeyed from Babylon to Jerusalem. According to scholarly analysis, this year corresponds to the period from the fall of 458 B.C. to the fall of 457 B.C., based on Jewish reckoning of regnal years. This dating is supported by historical and textual evidence, including the timing of events recorded in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, such as Ezra's departure and arrival in Jerusalem, which fall within 457 B.C. The decree issued by Artaxerxes in this year authorized Ezra to lead a group of Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants, back to Jerusalem, and provided resources and legal authority for the restoration of worship and governance according to the Law of God.” https://search.brave.com/search?q=seventh+year+of+the+reign+of+king+Artaxerxes&summary=1&conversation=7ae618535d14c5a1488594 ) So what happened in AD 27? Luke 3:1 “Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituræa and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.3.KJV Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.10.KJV
How many Biblical prophecies are there about Jesus? Let’s look at a few of them and ask some questions.
1. Born in Bethlehem: Micah 5:2 “But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MIC.5.KJV Could the unborn baby Jesus make himself be born in Bethlehem? No, but He was; Matthew 2:1 “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.2.KJV *
2. Born of a virgin: Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ISA.7.KJV Matthew 1:18 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.1.KJV *
3. David’s lineage: Jeremiah 23:5 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.” Revelation 22:16 “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/REV.22.KJV Matthew 1:6 “and Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;” (*link above) Luke 3:31 “which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.3.KJV
4.Target of murder attempt: Jeremiah 31:15 “Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JER.31.KJV
Matthew 2:16 “Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, Lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, And would not be comforted, because they are not.” (*link above) Did the Baby Jesus make Herod do this? No
5. Betrayed by a friend: Psalms 41:9 “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, Which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.” John 13:18 “I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.13.KJV Did Jesus cause Judas to betray him?
6. Sold for 30 silver coins: Zechariah 11:12 “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ZEC.11.KJV
Matthew 27:5 “And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10 and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.27.KJV *
7. Crucified: Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ZEC.12.KJV
(Combined #7 and #9) No bones broken: Psalms 34:20 "He keepeth all his bones: Not one of them is broken.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.34.KJV John 19:33 “But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.19.KJV Did Jesus have any control over this?
8. Cast lots for His clothes: Psalms 22:16 “For dogs have compassed me: The assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: They look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, And cast lots upon my vesture.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.22.KJV Matthew 27:35 “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.” *(link above) (#9 combined with #7)
10. Buried in a rich man’s tomb: Isaiah 53:9 “And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ISA.53.KJV Matthew 27:57 “When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: 58 he went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.” *(link above)
11. Year, day, hour of His death: Daniel 9:26, 27; Exodus 12:6 (see above) Matthew 27:45 “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.” *(link above)
12. Raised the third day: John 2:19 “Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 21 But he spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.2.KJV Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.10.KJV (note: The Jews count any part of a day as a whole day thus the Preparation day, Sabbath, and the first day of the week were three days)
There are people that claim that Jesus is not divine. That He is not equal with God the Father. The following excerpts are from: https://www.interfaith.org/community/threads/11508/
(They say)--"Bible Verses That Indicate Jesus Is Not God The Creator.
“1. Matthew 24:36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the Son, but the Father only. Here Jesus makes a distinction between what he knows and what the Father knows." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.24.KJV
(But the Bible says) Jesus was both fully God and fully man. Compare Genesis 1:1,26 "1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/GEN.1.KJV to John 1:1-4 "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men." https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.1.KJV and Isaiah 9:6,7 "6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ISA.9.KJV Isaiah 7:14 "14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ISA.7.KJV to Matthew 1:21 "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.1.KJV In His humanity Jesus did not know, but surely He does now.
"2. Matthew 26:39 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.26.KJV
My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me, yet not as I will, but as Thou will. Jesus’ will is likewise autonomous from God’s Will. Jesus is seeking acquiescence to God’s will."
(But) Again His humanity shrunk from the thought of torture and death. He wouldn't have volunteered for the job of restoring us humans if it hadn't been His will. 1 Peter 1:18 "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you," https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1PE.1.KJV
"3. John 5:26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. Jesus received his life from God. God received his life from no one. He is eternally self-existent." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.5.KJV (But) see also verse 17 and 18 of the same chapter! "But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God." (same link as above)
"4. John 5:30 (same link as above)
By myself, I can do nothing: I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who has sent me.
Jesus says, “by myself, I can do nothing.” This indicates that Jesus is relying upon his own relationship with God. He is not trying to “please myself” but rather is seeking to “please the one who sent me.”" (But) Again being fully God and fully human, Jesus didn't use his Godliness to overcome anything but asked His Father because that is how we would have to overcome. He had to live in his humanness in order to show us the way to live was by clinging to God.
"5. John 5:19 (same link as above)
The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees the Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son does also. Jesus declares that he is following a pattern laid down by God. He is expressing obedience to God."(But see #4)
"6. Mark 10:18 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.10.KJV
Why do you call me good? No one is good, except God alone.
Here Jesus emphatically makes a distinction between himself and God." (But) It wasn't a rebuke for calling Him good, he was making a statement that the rich young ruler was acknowledging Jesus divinity.
"7. John 14:28 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.14.KJV
The Father is greater than I. This is another strong statement that makes a distinction between Jesus and God." (But) see #4 again.
"8. Matthew 6:9 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.6.KJV
Our Father, which art in Heaven. He didn’t pray, Our Father, which art standing right here!” (The Bible says) Acts 7:49
"Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?" https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.7.KJV Yes God the Father resides in Heaven. (note: only called Father and Begotten son because Jesus took the form of humanity when He was here on earth)
"9. Matthew 27:46 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.27.KJV
My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Inconceivable if he is God the Creator." (But) Jesus is quoting Psalms 22:1 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring 6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.22.KJV He did this as one last attempt to get their attention because the Psalm was a prophecy about himself. Then Psalms 23 and 24 were continuing prophecies about himself. Him speaking those words were more in faith, of Psalms 24:7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah. These words were about Him going home to heaven after his death. https://my.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.24.KJV John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (and #1 & 4 again, link in #1 for John 1)
"10. John 17:21-23 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.17.KJV
. . .that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. . . that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. In this prayer Jesus defines the term “to be one.” It is clearly accomplished through the relationship of two autonomous beings. Christian believers are to model their relationship (to become one) after the relationship of God and Christ (as God and Christ are one). Notice that “to be one” does not mean to be “one and the same.” (the Bible agrees) Philippians 2:6 "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." https://www.bible.com/bible/1/PHP.2.KJV Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.28.KJV
"11. 1 Corinthians 15:27-28 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1CO.15.KJV
For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. Paul declares that God put everything under Christ, except God himself. Instead God rules all things through Christ. (remember: “through him all things were made.”)" (But, are you contradicting your own #9?) Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.4.KJV Jesus never once stopped anyone from worshiping Himself. Just a few examples: Matthew 15:25 “Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.15.KJV John 9:38 “And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.9.KJV Matthew 28:17 “And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.28.KJV Mark 5:6 “But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.5.KJV Luke 24:52 “And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:” https://www.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.24.KJV
“12. Hebrews 1:3 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.1.KJV
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being. Jesus is the exact representation of his being. I send my representative to Congress. He is not me, myself. He is my representative." (But) your congressional representative is not your EXACT representation. This verse speaks for itself.
"13. Hebrews 4:15 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.4.KJV (compared with James 1:13) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet without sin. Jesus has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he never sinned. See James 1:13: When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt. https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JAS.1.KJV Jesus was tempted in every way, but God cannot be tempted. This is why Jesus said, “don’t call me good, none are good, only God.” But first, you are misquoting Jesus. He never said, "Don't call me good." What He said was, "why are you calling me Good?" (see #6) God cannot be tempted, but the humanity that Jesus took upon Himself could.
"14. Hebrews 5:7-9 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.5.KJV
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. Jesus had to walk a course of faith and obedience in order to achieve perfection. By achieving perfection, Jesus “became” the source of eternal salvation." But you left out a little phrase that says, vs 7 “Who in the days of his flesh..." talking about when God took human form. Yes Jesus came and offered up prayers, and submitted His human will to that of the divine, because of this verse: 1 Peter 2:21 (KJV) "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:" https://www.bible.com/bible/1/1PE.2.KJV Jesus came to give us an example of how we could live. He could not have done this if He USED His divinity. Just because we cannot explain how He could be 100% human AND 100% Divine does not make any of His claims to be equal with God untrue. In fact, He would have been guilty of blasphemy if it were not true, which would make Him a most evil being and not a good man or prophet as some claim. See also Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.1.KJV (The link below is directly copied as is, without editing, links for verses added underneath it) https://www.gotquestions.org/is-Jesus-God.html
"Question: "Is Jesus God? Did Jesus ever claim to be God?"
Answer: The Bible never records Jesus saying the precise words, “I am God.” That does not mean, however, that He did not proclaim that He is God. Take for example Jesus’ words in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” We need only to look at the Jews’ reaction to His statement to know He was claiming to be God. They tried to stone Him for this very reason: “You, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33). The Jews understood exactly what Jesus was claiming—deity. When Jesus declared, “I and the Father are one,” He was saying that He and the Father are of one nature and essence. John 8:58 is another example. Jesus declared, “58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” Jews who heard this statement responded by taking up stones to kill Him for blasphemy, as the Mosaic Law commanded (Leviticus 24:16).
John reiterates the concept of Jesus’ deity: “The Word [Jesus] was God” and “the Word became flesh” (John 1:1,14). These verses clearly indicate that Jesus is God in the flesh. Acts 20:28 tells us, “Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” Who bought the church with His own blood? Jesus Christ. And this same verse declares that God purchased His church with His own blood. Therefore, Jesus is God! Thomas the disciple declared concerning Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Jesus does not correct him. Titus 2:13 encourages us to wait for the coming of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ (see also 2 Peter 1:1). In Hebrews 1:8, the Father declares of Jesus, “But about the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.’” The Father refers to Jesus as “O God,” indicating that Jesus is indeed God. In Revelation, an angel instructed the apostle John to only worship God (Revelation 19:10). Several times in Scripture Jesus receives worship (Matthew 2:11; 14:33; 28:9, 17; Luke 24:52; John 9:38). He never rebukes people for worshiping Him. If Jesus were not God, He would have told people to not worship Him, just as the angel in Revelation did. There are many other passages of Scripture that argue for Jesus’ deity. The most important reason that Jesus has to be God is that, if He is not God, His death would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). A created being, which Jesus would be if He were not God, could not pay the infinite penalty required for sin against an infinite God. Only God could pay such an infinite penalty. Only God could take on the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21), die, and be resurrected, proving His victory over sin and death." https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.10.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.8.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/LEV.24.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.1.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.20.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.20.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/2PE.1.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.1.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/REV.19.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.2.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.14.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.28.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.24.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.9.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/1JN.2.KJV https://www.bible.com/bible/1/2CO.5.KJV
Who was Satan wanting to be? Isaiah 14:12 “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ISA.14.KJV Daniel 4:2 “I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me. 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/DAN.4.KJV Psalms 78:35 “And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.78.KJV 1 Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1CO.10.KJV 1 Peter 1:18 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1PE.1.KJV Answer : Jesus = most high God Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. https://my.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.1.KJV
What characteristics only belong to God; Does Jesus have all of those characteristics; Why did the Jews hate Jesus so much; and finally what does Jesus say about himself? Exodus 3:5, 6 reads, "And He said, draw not nigh hither; put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover He said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/EXO.3.KJV Our first characteristic we are looking at is the Holiness of God. Can anyone but God claim to be holy? Some would point to verses such as Leviticus 11:45 which is repeated in 1 Peter 1:16 let's read both of them. First Leviticus 11:45 "For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/LEV.11.KJV And 1 Peter 1:16 "Because it is written, be ye holy; for I am holy." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1PE.1.KJV But can we really BE holy? And if so how? Acts 3:12 begins to shed some light on this answer. "And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? Or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?" https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.3.KJV Not even the apostle Peter claimed to be holy. So if we have ANYTHING "holy" about us where does it come from? Let's look at another text. This time in Romans 3:10 "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ROM.3.KJV and again in Romans this time in chapter 10:3 "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ROM.10.KJV Therefore it is only by our acceptance of God's holiness that we can be holy. So the ONLY beings in the universe with a claim of their own holiness is the Godhead.
Eternal, is the second characteristic of God we will be looking at today. What does the Bible say about God's existence? Psalms 90:2 "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/PSA.90.KJV This is an easy one. There are only three texts needed for this. The first one is in Revelation 1:1,8,17,18 they read, "1. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 8. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. 17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/REV.1.KJV So, this book is about Jesus who is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Not that He had a beginning or an end but that He IS the beginning and the end of everything. The next two verses make it even more clear. The gospel of John chapter 1 verses 1 through 3, 1. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. The same was in the beginning with God. 3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." https://www.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.1.KJV Who is this talking about? Let's break it down, The "Word" was with God and the "Word" was God. And all things were made by Him. Him who? Verse 14 clarifies, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." Can this be clearer? Matthew 1:23 is also clear on this point, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.1.KJV Jesus came and dwelt with us! So, we can compare John 1:1-3 with the creation account in Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." and verse 26 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/GEN.1.KJV John chapter one states that nothing was created without Jesus Christ and Genesis 1 confirms that all three members of the Godhead were present at creation; verse one God created, verse 2 the Spirit of God moved over the waters, and verse 26 God made man in "our" image. Compare these verses to Revelation 4:11 "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/REV.4.KJV
The third quality of God is that He is the ONLY being that is worthy to be worshipped. Exodus 20:3 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6. And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/EXO.20.KJV The Bible is clear on this point only God is to be worshipped. Let's take a look at two different texts regarding worship of other beings. The first is found in Matthew 4:8 "Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9. And saith unto him, all these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.4.KJV Jesus reminded Satan that only God was to be worshipped. In another instance in Revelation 19:10 John writes; " And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, see thou do it not; I am thy fellow servant and of thy brethren, that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God; for the testimony of God is the Spirit of Prophecy." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/REV.19.KJV Not even the angels of God are worthy to be worshipped! Acts chapter 14 verses 11-18 tell of an instance where Paul and Barnabas were being worshipped and how Paul stopped them. "11. And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. 12. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. 13. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. 14. Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, 15. And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16. Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. 18. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/ACT.14.KJV
Our last quality or characteristic of God is that only God can forgive sins. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke the Jews were indignant with Jesus because He dared to tell people that their sins were forgiven. You can read these in Matthew 9:1 “And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5. For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6. But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.9.KJV The Jews said that Jesus was blaspheming because the forgiveness of sins is an attribute that only God has. Anybody else that would claim to be able to forgive sins is blaspheming! Mark chapter 2:1-11 https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.2.KJV records the same story as does Luke chapter 5:18-25. https://my.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.5.KJV
Now let's take a look at Jesus. Was Jesus holy? Hebrews 4:15 "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/HEB.4.KJV Yes Jesus is holy. We have already established that He is eternal and that He could forgive sins, so the only other characteristic we need to look at is the idea of worship. We have seen examples of how men and angels did not permit people to worship them and we saw an example of when Jesus refused to worship Satan but did Jesus permit others to worship Him when He was here? The Gospels are full of accounts of different people coming to worship Jesus. The first account is given when Jesus was still an infant in Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.2.KJV If Joseph and Mary were such good, godly, Jewish parents shouldn't they have forbidden this? Let's look at several texts as well. Matthew 8:2 “And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.8.KJV Matthew 9:18 “While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.9.KJV Matthew 14:33 “Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.14.KJV Matthew 15:22 “And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.15.KJV Matthew 20:20 “Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.20.KJV Matthew 28:9 “And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. 11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. 12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, 13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. 16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.28.KJV Mark 5:6” But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.5.KJV Luke 24:52 “And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy;” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/LUK.24.KJV and John 9:38 “And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.9.KJV Given the fact that angels, the disciples and apostles all refuse to let men worship them, and even Jesus Himself tells Satan that only God is to be worshiped don't you think that if these people were doing something wrong that Jesus would tell them? People want to say that Jesus isn't God; that He was "just a good man." But would a "good man" keep letting people worship Him if it was wrong to do? Think for a minute about the story of the money changers in the temple. What did Jesus do there? See Mark chapter 11. In verse 17 Jesus calls the temple “MY House” but aren’t temples or churches “God’s house? 17 "And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MRK.11.KJV Also the ten commandments strictly forbid worshiping any other God but the God of heaven, if Jesus received worship and was not God then He was breaking the first two of the commandments and we know that Jesus didn’t break the commandments or His sacrifice would not have been acceptable.
Repeatedly the Jews wanted to stone Jesus for blasphemy. Blasphemy is when you pretend to be God or speak against God. Ultimately this is what lead to Jesus crucifixion. Matthew 26:64-65 "Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/MAT.26.KJV A good man does not blaspheme.
Finally what does Jesus Himself say about His relationship to God? I want to first compare to verses. John 8:58 reads, "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.8.KJV This the Jews understood to be a direct reference to Exodus 3:14 which reads, "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/EXO.3.KJV This statement of Jesus' is probably one of the most direct statements Jesus could have made regarding His equality with God however in John 10 verse 30 Jesus makes his claim even more plain by saying, "I and my Father are one." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/JHN.10.KJV
In conclusion, for the people that say that Jesus was "just a good man or just a prophet" I beg to differ. Either Jesus was exactly who He claimed to be or he would have to be the worst villain in human history!! They cannot have it both ways. 1 John 5:7 clears up any controversy by saying, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." https://my.bible.com/bible/1/1JN.5.KJV
